Event Description:
This October there is a very special chance to experience and care for one of the rarest and most fascinating places in Illinois: a tallgrass prairie remnant in a pioneer cemetery.
A lesson in survival, this fragment of a once-vast ecosystem withstood all the changes to our state over the past 200 years, and is still home to plants, insects, and other animals that can be found nowhere else
But to survive for the next 200 years, and beyond, this unique window into Illinois history needs our help. So on this day we will be collecting seed, cutting brush that is invading and suffocating prairie plants, and preparing for the most exciting time of the year: burn season!
Special Notes:
On the site there is poison ivy and the ground is uneven so the following attire should be worn:
work gloves, longsleeves, bugspray, long socks, boots or closed toed shoes, hat, safety glasses.
